The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), National Bank for Public Works and Services (BANOBRAS), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Green Bank Network (GBN), and the Latin American Association of Development Financing Institutions (ALIDE) jointly organized a conference on “National Development Banks and Green Banks: Key Institutions for Mobilizing Finance Towards the Implementation of NDCs and SDGs” on 26-27 June 2017 in Mexico City, Mexico.

The event  was attended by around 30 individuals from GBN Member institutions, the Japanese government, and several international non-governmental and quasi-governmental institutions. The Green Bank Congress consisted of a welcoming address by our host emphasizing the timeliness of the event in light of the recent Paris Agreement followed by presentations by green banking and financial institutions, the Green Climate Fund, and the Green Bank Network.

A paper was prepared by the Natural Resources Defense Council with the support of Climate Finance Advisors in preparation for the conference.  The paper, which can be accessed in English and Spanish, is intended to provide context for the more thorough examination at the conference of:

  • potential opportunities for knowledge exchanges between existing green investment banks (GIBs) and national
development banks (NDBs) in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region; and
  • ways in which the green investment bank model could be adapted to the LAC context to enhance the region’s ability to
invest in low-carbon and climate resilient infrastructure at the scale and pace required to meet NDCs and achieve SDGs.

A selection of slides that were presented at the conference are posted in the Knowledge Center Slide Decks page and are listed below. Please contact [email protected] with any inquiries about the event.
